A community of volunteers committed to land and at sea to combat plastic pollution Wings of the Ocean is an association founded in 2018 with the aim of combating plastic pollution. Its tasks are to clean up the coastlines, raise public awareness of plastic issues and provide solutions to reduce such pollution. In 2021 it became the French association producing the most depollution, with 250 collections, for a total of 60 tons of waste collected.
The seas and oceans are now extremely threatened by plastic pollution. Nearly 10 million tons of waste are dumped there every year, destroying ecosystems.
The Mediterranean Sea, bordered by many countries and fed by several rivers, is particularly affected by this pollution. Every year, about 230,000 tons of waste ends up there, and it now accumulates more than a million tons of plastic.
Wings of the Ocean has developed a sailing mission aboard the Kraken, a 42m-masted Kraken, with the aim of surveying neighbouring Mediterranean coastlines (France, Italy, Spain, North Africa) in order to protect them from plastic pollution.
The crew will carry out clean-up operations to preserve local biodiversity, to raise the plastic issue and to collect data to feed science and carry out research on plastic pollution. Also, the members of the association will carry out awareness-raising activities for the various audiences encountered in order to change behaviour.
Since its inception in 2018, Wings of the Ocean has already cleaned up 4,000,000 m2 and collected about 100 tons of waste through more than 700 shares.
The funds raised will be used to finance the maintenance of the vessel, the equipment necessary for the navigation and the (vegetal) supply of the crew.
15,000 kg of waste collected through 80 clean-up operations; and 100 awareness-raising activities.
